Designing the Cover for a Hardcover Book — Foil, Emboss, Deboss, and Linen Explained

Start with the case style, not the artwork

The single biggest wasted design cycle in hardcover book printing is starting the artwork before choosing the case style. A printed paper wrap and a linen wrap take completely different files, dies, and finishes. Pick one first:

• Printed paper wrap → design in full-color CMYK, add spot-varnish or spot-UV if you want a coating hit on the title.
• Linen wrap → design in single-color line art only. Every mark on the cover is a foil stamp, an emboss, or a deboss. There is no CMYK on linen.

Linen colors we stock

Kolt Printing runs seven linen colors as standard, replenished weekly:

• Black — the workhorse; foil-stamps beautifully in gold, silver, copper, or rose-gold.
• Deep navy — modern-corporate; pairs with silver or matte white foil.
• Cream — literary / memoir; blind emboss reads gorgeously on cream.
• Charcoal — moody, minimalist; matte-black foil produces a stealth effect.
• Deep red — classic library aesthetic; gold foil is the pairing.
• Forest green — collectible / heritage; copper or gold foil.
• Kraft — natural, sustainable, unbleached fiber; blind deboss is the on-brand finish.

If you need a color we don't stock (bright teal, blush pink, an on-brand Pantone), we can dye a run for a $300 setup fee — allow an extra 5 business days.

Foil stamp file prep — 100% vector, no gradients

Foil stamping presses a solid metal into the cover. There are no half-tones, no gradients, no soft edges. Your foil file has to be:

• 100% vector (AI, PDF/X-4, or SVG). Raster artwork will not stamp cleanly.
• Every mark is 100% black (0/0/0/100 CMYK) on a transparent background — think of it as a mask, not a color.
• Minimum stroke width 0.5pt. Minimum text size 6pt (serif) or 5pt (sans-serif). Anything smaller won't hold the foil.
• Named 'FOIL' as its own layer or spot channel so our pre-press team can extract it into the stamping die.

Embossing and debossing — same file rules, different die

Emboss / deboss dies are cut from the same vector artwork. Both need:

• Minimum stroke width 1pt for a clean impression. Emboss can hold thinner marks than deboss.
• No enclosed areas smaller than 0.05 in² — those blow out on emboss and fill with lint on deboss.
• Named 'EMBOSS' or 'DEBOSS' on its own layer so we can build the correct die (male-die for emboss, female-die for deboss).
• Distance from any edge or gutter: at least 0.25 in. Impressions near an edge lift the linen and fray it.

If you're combining foil + emboss (a foil-stamped emboss — the raised-metal title), submit the same shape on both the FOIL layer and the EMBOSS layer. We register the two dies to 0.005 in precision on the case-line.

Spine width — the math

The spine width depends on your page count and paper weight. A quick estimator:

• 80lb gloss text — page count × 0.0032 in = spine width.
• 100lb gloss text — page count × 0.0038 in = spine width.
• 60lb offset uncoated — page count × 0.0035 in = spine width.
• Add 0.20 in for the case boards themselves.

Example: 240 pages on 100lb gloss = (240 × 0.0038) + 0.20 = 1.11 in spine. Design your cover as a single-panel spread: back-cover + spine + front-cover, with 0.375 in wrap allowance on all four outer edges.

Send us three files as a single ZIP: interior (PDF/X-4), cover art (PDF/X-4 with FOIL/EMBOSS/DEBOSS layers if applicable), and endpaper (optional; PDF or 'match stock chip #3').
