BOPP vs Paper Labels: Which Label Stock Should You Choose? (All 9 Stocks Compared, With Real Prices)
Paper or BOPP? White or clear? When metallic, holographic, felt, fluorescent or UL polyester is worth it. A plain-English guide to roll label materials with durability, finish compatibility and real relative prices for the same size and quantity.

Quick answer
If the label stays dry and indoors — boxes, mailers, retail tags, promotions — choose paper: it is the most economical stock and takes every lamination and foil. If the label will ever meet water, oil, condensation, a fridge or a freezer — bottles, jars, cosmetics, food, cleaning products — choose white BOPP (polypropylene). It will not tear, wrinkle or lift, and for the same size and quantity it costs only about 6% more than paper at 10,000 labels. Want the container to show through? That is clear BOPP.
What BOPP actually is
BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene: a thin plastic film stretched in two directions during manufacture, which makes it dimensionally stable, tear resistant and completely waterproof. Printers love it because it lies flat on a roll, takes full-colour ink beautifully and survives the dishwasher-adjacent abuse that destroys paper. It comes as a bright opaque white (white BOPP) or fully transparent (clear BOPP), both with a permanent acrylic adhesive by default.

When paper is still the right call
- Shipping and product boxes, mailer seals, retail hang-tag stickers and promotional stickers.
- Candles, soaps and dry goods that sit on a shelf and never get wet (a matte lamination adds scuff resistance).
- Anything where budget per label matters most at high volume — paper is the base price everything else is measured against.
- Kraft-look and textured branding: paper takes matte lamination and soft-touch beautifully, and the felt/textured option (below) is paper too.
When BOPP earns its 6%
- Beverage, sauce, honey and condiment jars — condensation and drips are guaranteed.
- Cosmetics, bath and body, shampoo and skincare in a wet bathroom.
- Refrigerated and frozen food: paper fibres wick moisture and lift; BOPP stays flat.
- Cleaning products and anything with oil, alcohol or solvents on the label face.
- Squeezable bottles and tubes — BOPP flexes with the container instead of creasing.

White BOPP vs clear BOPP
Both are the same waterproof film; the difference is what shows through. White BOPP gives you a clean white canvas on any container colour, so photos and brand colours print exactly as designed. Clear BOPP disappears on glass and clear plastic, which looks premium on spirits, kombucha, candles in glass and cosmetics — but anything printed on it is seen against the product. We print a white ink base under the artwork where it needs to read; tell us which elements should stay transparent. Clear costs about 1.36× paper versus 1.06× for white BOPP, mostly because of the extra white ink pass and film cost.
The specialty stocks, and what they cost
| Stock | Best for | Durability | Finishes | Relative price* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver metalized | Tech, cosmetics, chrome-look branding | Moisture resistant | Lamination + foil | ≈ 1.39× |
| Gold metalized | Spirits, candles, luxury gifting | Moisture resistant | Lamination + foil | ≈ 1.5× |
| Holographic | Limited editions, events, shelf impact | Moisture resistant | Lamination + foil | ≈ 1.9× |
| Fluorescent paper | Warnings, sale tags, warehouse labels | Indoor / dry only | Print only | ≈ 1.14× |
| Felt / textured paper | Wine, craft food, artisan brands | Indoor / dry only | Print only | ≈ 1.67× |
| UL-certified polyester | Electrical, equipment, compliance | Chemical, heat, abrasion resistant | Lamination only | ≈ 1.74× |

Metallic and holographic stocks let you print full colour over a mirror base, so any area left unprinted shows the metal: a cheaper, more flexible route to a 'foil' look than foil stamping every design element. Felt and fluorescent are papers with a job to do — texture and visibility — and are print-only (no lamination or foil). UL-certified polyester is a compliance material for electrical and industrial equipment; it takes lamination for extra abrasion resistance but not foil.

Lamination and foil: what goes with what
Paper, white BOPP, clear BOPP, silver, gold and holographic all take gloss, matte or soft-touch lamination and gold, silver, rose gold or holographic foil stamping (holographic foil runs about 15% more than the other foils). UL polyester takes lamination but no foil. Felt and fluorescent are print-only. Lamination is the cheapest durability upgrade on any stock — a matte lamination on paper is often all a dry-goods label needs.
Sizes, shapes, quantities and the die charge
- Sizes from 0.5" × 1" up to 12" × 12", in rectangle, square, circle or custom shape — priced on the bounding width × height (a 3" circle prices like a 3" × 3" square).
- Quantities from 250 to 100,000 per design on most stocks; felt runs 500–10,000 and UL polyester 250–10,000, with larger runs quoted individually.
- Sizes on ½" steps use our existing dies. Anything off a ½" step, any custom shape, and very large dies (over 7" × 9") carry a one-time $295 custom die charge shown before you add to cart.

- BOPP vs paper labels — which should I choose?
- Choose paper when the label stays dry and indoors (boxes, mailers, retail tags, promotions): it is the most economical stock and takes gloss, matte or soft-touch lamination and foil. Choose white BOPP whenever the label meets water, oil, condensation or a fridge or freezer — bottles, jars, cosmetics, food, cleaning products. BOPP will not tear, wrinkle or lift, and at 10,000 labels of the same size it costs only about 6% more than paper.
- What is the difference between white BOPP and clear BOPP labels?
- Both are the same waterproof polypropylene film. White BOPP gives a bright, opaque white background so colours print vivid on any container. Clear BOPP is transparent, so the container shows through for a 'no-label' look on glass and clear plastic; artwork that needs to read on dark liquids is printed with a white ink layer underneath. Clear runs about 1.36× the price of paper, white BOPP about 1.06×.
- Are BOPP labels waterproof?
- Yes. White and clear BOPP are waterproof and resistant to oil and tearing, which is why they are the standard for beverages, cosmetics, bath products and refrigerated or frozen food. Add a gloss or matte lamination for extra scuff resistance in high-handling environments.
- How much more do metallic, holographic or felt labels cost than paper?
- For the same size and quantity at 10,000 labels: silver metalized is about 1.39× paper, gold metalized about 1.5×, holographic about 1.9×, felt/textured paper about 1.67× and UL-certified polyester about 1.74×. Prices scale with label size and fall sharply at higher quantities.
- Which label stocks can take lamination and foil stamping?
- Paper, white BOPP, clear BOPP, silver, gold and holographic stocks all take gloss, matte or soft-touch lamination and gold, silver, rose gold or holographic foil. UL-certified polyester takes lamination but not foil. Felt/textured and fluorescent papers are print-only.
- Can I get BOPP labels in a custom shape?
- Yes. Rectangles, squares and circles on ½" steps use existing dies; any custom shape (or a size off a ½" step) adds a one-time $295 custom die charge, and the label is priced on its bounding width × height. Upload your outline with the artwork.
