The fabric that pulls itself flat

Tension fabric is what the seamless, wrinkle-free walls at trade shows are made of. Our 8.8oz 2-way stretch polyester is a knit that stretches horizontally and vertically, so when it is pulled over an aluminium frame it goes drum-tight and stays that way — no sagging, no ripple, no visible hardware. Dye-sublimation prints the colour directly into the fibres for vibrant, glare-free graphics. Hemming and 4-corner grommets are included at no charge.

Tension fabric vs. 9oz wrinkle-free — which do I need?

  • Tension fabric (8.8oz stretch): for any rigid frame — pop-up displays, pillowcase frames, SEG (silicone edge) frames, backlit lightboxes, hanging structures and column wraps. It must be stretched to look right.
  • Wrinkle-free fabric (9oz non-stretch): for hanging from a pole, crossbar, hooks or grommets, and for drapes and tapestries. It should not be stretched.
  • Quick test: if the fabric will be pulled over a frame, choose tension. If it will hang freely, choose 9oz.

How do I size a graphic for my frame?

Tension fabric is ordered slightly smaller than the frame so it stretches taut. The usual rule is 1 – 2% under the frame's outside dimensions — for a 96 × 96" frame, a 94 × 94" graphic. Every frame manufacturer publishes a graphic template; send it with your order or note the frame model in production notes and our team will confirm the finished size before printing. Never order tension fabric at the exact frame dimension — it will hang loose.

Pillowcase and SEG finishing

Our standard finish is hemmed edges with 4-corner grommets, which fits most pole and clip-frame systems. Pillowcase graphics (a sewn sleeve that slides over a frame with a zipper at the bottom) and SEG graphics (a silicone bead sewn to the edge that tucks into an aluminium channel) are custom-finished — request a quote with your frame model and we will build it to spec.

Can it be backlit?

Yes. Stretch polyester diffuses light evenly, which is why lightbox displays use it. For backlit use, design with lighter backgrounds and higher ink density — colours will appear roughly 20% lighter when lit from behind. Tell us the graphic is for a lightbox and we will boost saturation in pre-press.

Sizes and file prep

Prints up to 90" wide in a single piece and up to 100 ft long. Supply CMYK PDF, TIFF, AI, EPS or PSD at 150 DPI full size with 1" bleed. Because the fabric stretches, keep critical text and logos 3" inside the finished size — edges pull around the frame profile. Like all dye-sub, white is unprinted fabric, so white type stays crisp and bright. Every file is pre-flighted by a Kolt designer.

Care and re-use

Tension graphics are designed to be installed and struck dozens of times. Fold loosely, store in the frame's carry bag, and shake out before each install. Machine-wash cold and hang dry if it gets dirty. A steamer removes any stubborn fold marks in seconds, though most vanish once the fabric is tensioned.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell the frame too?
This product is the printed graphic only. We print replacement graphics for every major frame brand — send us the model number and we will match the template.
Can tension fabric be used outdoors?
For tents, covered stages and short outdoor events, yes. For permanent outdoor installs use vinyl or mesh.
Will the graphic distort when stretched?
No. The 1 – 2% undersize is uniform, so the artwork stretches evenly in both directions and looks correct once mounted.
Is it flame-retardant?
Yes — the 8.8oz polyester meets NFPA 701, the standard convention centres and hotels require. Certificates available on request.
Can I print double-sided?
Single-sided is standard. For double-sided hanging structures we sew two graphics around a blockout liner — request a quote.
Why are hems and grommets free on this product?
Tension fabric is almost always finished for a frame, so precision hemming and 4-corner grommets are part of every job. Grommets every 24" are a small add-on.
