Six banners, one decision

Every week someone asks us 'just a banner, please' — and the honest answer is 'which one?' We print six banner materials in Houston and ship them nationwide, and each exists because it solves a problem the others don't: wind, sun, double-sided readability, glare under camera lights, or fitting a trade-show frame. This guide puts all six side by side, then answers the questions customers ask most before they order.

1 · 13oz Matte Vinyl — the workhorse

Scrim-reinforced PVC vinyl printed with UV-stable inks, hemmed on all sides with grommets every two feet. This is the banner most people picture: 'Grand Opening', 'Now Leasing', the sponsor banner on the soccer fence. Matte finish means no glare in photos or under store lights. It is rated for 3–5 years outdoors in normal weather and prints up to 112" wide seamless in any length.

• Choose it when: the banner hangs flat against a wall, storefront, or fence in a sheltered spot, or is used indoors and outdoors alternately.
• Skip it when: it will face open wind (go mesh), needs to read from both sides (go 18oz blockout), or will be up for years in Texas sun on a pole (go 18oz).

2 · 18oz Blockout Vinyl — the most durable

Industrial-grade vinyl with reinforced scrim and an opaque black blockout core. Because light cannot pass through, it is the only vinyl we recommend for true double-sided printing — no ghost of the reverse image on a sunny day. It is also the material for pole banners, streetlight banners, stadium rails and anything that stays up for years. Available with 2" or 3" pole pockets top and bottom.

• Choose it when: two-sided, long-term, or mounted on poles/hardware that puts constant tension on the banner.
• Skip it when: you need airflow (it is solid — go mesh), or the job is short-term where 13oz does the same at 35% less.

3 · Indoor Super Smooth — photo-quality indoors

A 14 mil double-white banner stock with an ultra-smooth face made for high-resolution imagery. Low-memory material means it unrolls flat with no roll curl or fold marks — ideal for retail campaigns that go up in minutes, hanging signage in malls and showrooms, and event backdrops where a vinyl texture would show in photos. Prints to very large sizes; hem and grommet options as standard.

• Choose it when: the banner is indoors, image quality matters (product photography, faces, fine type), and it must lie perfectly flat.
• Skip it when: any outdoor exposure is likely — it is not weather-rated.

4 · 10oz Mesh 70/30 — built for wind

PVC-coated polyester mesh with a 70/30 weave: 70% printed surface, 30% open holes. Roughly a third of the wind passes straight through, so the banner never becomes a sail that rips its grommets out or pulls a fence over. This is the correct choice for construction fencing, scaffolding wraps, ball-field fences, rooftop and parking-garage signage, and any long outdoor run. From a normal viewing distance the holes disappear; up close it reads as a fine screen.

• Choose it when: the banner is mounted on a fence, railing or between posts with open air behind it.
• Skip it when: you need dense, saturated colour close up or a photo-quality image — the perforation softens fine detail.
• Never cut wind slits in a solid vinyl banner instead — slits create tear points. Mesh is the engineered answer.

5 · 9oz Wrinkle-Free Fabric — glare-free on camera

Dye-sublimated 9 oz polyester: the ink is infused into the fibres, so the surface is soft, matte and completely glare-free under flash and stage lighting. It folds into a bag, shakes out wrinkle-free and hangs like cloth. This is what step-and-repeat backdrops, photo walls, stage scrims, church and school banners and indoor tapestries should be printed on.

• Choose it when: cameras are involved, the banner travels folded, or you want a premium cloth look indoors.
• Skip it when: it lives outdoors (polyester fades and holds water) or needs to be truly opaque on a lit wall without a blockout liner.

6 · 8.8oz Tension Fabric — made for frames

A 2-way stretch polyester, dye-sublimated, finished to fit a frame: pillowcase (sewn sleeve that zips over a tube frame), silicone edge for SEG and lightbox frames, or sewn pockets for tension stands. Stretched on a frame it is drum-tight and seamless — the finish trade shows expect. Sold as a graphic alone to fit your existing frame, or as complete displays.

• Choose it when: you have (or are buying) a frame — tension stands, pop-up displays, SEG walls, backlit lightboxes, column wraps.
• Skip it when: you simply need to hang a banner from grommets — the stretch is wasted and the 9oz fabric costs less.

The questions everyone asks

How long will my banner last outside?

13oz vinyl: 3–5 years in normal exposure, less on a south-facing wall in Houston summer. 18oz blockout: 5+ years. Mesh: 2–3 years, longer than vinyl in wind because it does not stress at the grommets. Fabric and super smooth: indoor only — a weekend outdoors is fine, a season is not.

Grommets, hems or pole pockets — what should I choose?

• Hemmed on all sides is our default and always the right answer outdoors: a sewn hem doubles the edge and stops fraying and tearing.
• Grommets every 2 ft on all sides is standard for bungee or zip-tie mounting. Four corners only is fine for small indoor banners under 3 × 6 ft.
• Pole pockets (2" fits a 1" pole; 3" fits a 1.5" pole) give a clean top and bottom for hanging rods, banner stands and streetlight brackets; you can combine pole pockets top/bottom with grommets on the sides.
• Mount with bungee cords rather than rigid rope — they absorb gusts instead of passing the shock to the grommets.

Can I get my banner double-sided?

Yes — on 18oz blockout (one piece, opaque core) and on mesh (two banners sewn back to back). 13oz vinyl and fabric show a faint mirror of the reverse when backlit by the sun, so we don't print them two-sided; if you need a two-sided fabric display, pillowcase tension fabric prints both faces cleanly.

What size can you print, and is it seamless?

Vinyl and blockout print seamless up to 112" (9 ft 4 in) in one dimension and over 140 ft in the other; mesh and fabrics up to 90–96" wide; super smooth well beyond that. Wider than the roll, we weld or sew a seam — tell us the mounting and we will place it where it is least visible.

How should I set up the artwork?

• Build at full size (or 25%/50% and tell us the scale), CMYK, 100–150 ppi at final size; vector logos and type.
• Add 1" bleed and keep text and logos 3" inside the edge — hems and grommets eat the border.
• Use a rich black (C60 M40 Y40 K100) for solid black on vinyl; plain K prints charcoal.
• Big type wins. Rule of thumb: 1" of letter height per 10 ft of viewing distance — a banner read from across a parking lot needs 8–10" letters.
• Send a PDF; we pre-flight every file and email a proof before printing.

Can I wash or store my banner?

Vinyl and mesh: wipe with mild soap and water, roll (never fold) print-side out, store dry. Fabrics: cool gentle machine wash, hang dry, fold in a bag — creases shake or steam out.

How fast can I get it?

Standard production is 2–3 business days plus shipping from Houston; rush production is available on all six materials. Same-day production is possible on many vinyl sizes if the file arrives before 11 AM CT, shipping that evening for next-morning delivery in Houston — ask. We are a production-only facility and ship nationwide; there is no walk-in pickup.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best banner material for windy areas?

10oz 70/30 mesh. About 30% of the wind passes through the weave, so the banner does not act as a sail and tear at the grommets. Never cut wind slits into solid vinyl.

What is the difference between 13oz and 18oz vinyl banners?

13oz is the standard scrim vinyl for storefronts and events (3–5 years outdoors). 18oz blockout is heavier, tear-resistant, has an opaque core for double-sided printing, and lasts 5+ years — it is the choice for pole banners and permanent installations.

Are fabric banners good for outdoors?

No. Our 9oz and 8.8oz fabrics are dye-sublimated polyester designed for indoor use — trade shows, backdrops and retail. Outdoors they fade and hold water; use vinyl, blockout or mesh instead.

How far apart should banner grommets be?

Every 2 feet on all sides is standard. For small indoor banners, four corners is enough; for high-wind mounts, use mesh and bungee cords.

Which banner is best for photo backdrops?

9oz wrinkle-free fabric — matte and glare-free under flash — or indoor super smooth if you need a very high-resolution image on a flat wall.

Can you print a banner the same day?
