Why brands are switching to recycled kraft

Kraft is the label you notice with your fingers before your eyes. That warm, fibrous, slightly uneven brown surface tells a customer three things in under a second: this was made by people, it wasn't over-packaged, and the company behind it cares where its materials come from. Our Recycled Kraft Roll Labels are made from 100% post-consumer recycled fibre, FSC®-certified, uncoated and unbleached — no chlorine, no clay coating, no plastic film — printed and converted in our Houston, Texas facility and shipped nationwide.

They are the natural fit for honey, jam and preserves, craft coffee and tea, soap and skincare, candles, bakery boxes, small-batch spirits, seed packets, apparel hang-labels and any brand that leads with 'small batch', 'organic', 'zero-waste' or 'made by hand'.

What's actually in the label

  • Face stock: 60# natural kraft paper, 100% post-consumer recycled content, FSC®-certified chain of custody. Uncoated, so it keeps the visible fibre and takes handwriting with any pen.
  • Adhesive: permanent all-temperature acrylic as standard — grabs glass, tin, cardboard and corrugate and stays put from freezer to pantry. Removable adhesive available for gift wrap, reusable jars and seasonal packaging.
  • Liner: 40# recyclable paper liner (no silicone-coated PET), so the roll waste can go in curbside paper recycling.
  • End of life: the paper label composts with the box or jar-label paper stream. Kraft is one of the very few label stocks that a recycler will actually accept on a cardboard carton.

How ink behaves on kraft — and how to design for it

Kraft is brown, and it is not bright. Every colour you print sits on top of that brown, so the label never looks the same as it did on your white monitor. Three approaches that work:

  • Black or one dark ink only. Rich black logo, black type — the classic apothecary and roastery look. Cheapest, highest contrast, zero surprises on press.
  • White ink underprint. We lay down an opaque white first, then print your CMYK on top of it. Bright colours and photos read true; the kraft frames them. You can choose white behind the whole design or only behind the logo so the fibre still shows around it.
  • Metallic copper-brown or gold accent. A single warm metallic tone on kraft looks like a hot-foil stamp at a fraction of the price. It is our most-requested finish on candle and cosmetics labels.
  • Keep text at 7 pt or larger and avoid ultra-thin hairlines — uncoated fibre soaks up ink and fine lines gain weight.
  • Expect pastels and light tints to go muddy without a white underprint. If it must be pale pink, put white under it.
  • Photos need the white underprint. A photograph printed directly onto kraft looks like a sepia postcard — sometimes that is exactly the look, so tell us which you want.
  • Supply vector logos and outlined fonts; we will send a PDF proof that simulates the kraft tone before anything goes to press.

Shapes, sizes and finishing

  • Any custom size up to 12" wide, cut to rectangles, circles, ovals, rounded corners or a full custom die-cut shape (a bespoke shape carries a one-time die charge).
  • Supplied on rolls with your choice of core size and unwind direction so they drop straight onto a hand dispenser or an automatic applicator.
  • Optional matte varnish for smudge resistance on labels that will be handled a lot. We skip gloss lamination on kraft — it kills the texture and makes the label non-recyclable.
  • Minimum order 100 labels per design, with pricing tiers to 25,000+ and mixed designs on one order welcome.

Kraft vs. white paper vs. BOPP — pick the right one

  • Choose recycled kraft when the brand story is natural, handmade or zero-waste, the product lives indoors or in the pantry, and you want the label to be recyclable with the carton.
  • Choose white semi-gloss or matte paper when colour accuracy matters most and the label still lives indoors.
  • Choose white or clear BOPP film when the label meets water, oil, condensation or a freezer — bath products, cold-chain food, outdoor use. Kraft paper will soften and lift in a wet environment.

Frequently asked questions

Are your kraft labels really recycled?
Yes. The face stock is 100% post-consumer recycled kraft paper with FSC® chain-of-custody certification, and the liner is a recyclable paper liner rather than plastic film.
Can you print white or bright colours on kraft?
Yes. We print an opaque white ink layer first and your colours on top, so logos and photos stay bright while the kraft shows around them. Without the white layer, colours take on a warm, muted tone.
Are kraft labels waterproof?
No. Kraft is an uncoated paper. It is fine for pantry, retail and gift products, but for bathroom, cold-chain or outdoor items choose our white or clear BOPP film labels.
Will kraft labels stick to glass jars and tins?
Yes. The standard permanent acrylic adhesive bonds to glass, tin, coated paper and corrugated boxes and holds from freezer temperatures to pantry heat. A removable version is available for reusable containers.
What is the minimum order and turnaround?
100 labels per design. Standard turnaround is 3–5 business days after proof approval; rush production is available on request — send us the specs and your deadline.
Are the labels printed in the USA?
Yes — printed, die-cut and rewound in our Houston, Texas facility and shipped nationwide.
