Adhesive matters more than face stock

Most people obsess over face stock — matte paper vs. gloss BOPP vs. clear. That's the wrong first question when you're ordering labels. Coolers swing 40°F a day. Trucks bake in the sun crossing Arizona. Refrigerated warehouses pull moisture out of paper. The label material that fails first is almost always the adhesive, not the face stock.

Three adhesive families we stock, and where each wins:

  • Permanent acrylic — Rated to 150°F and negative 40°F. Wins in food, cold-chain, and outdoor use. This is our default.
  • Removable acrylic — Peels clean up to about 90 days. Great for promotional and short-run consumer goods.
  • High-tack rubber — For low-surface-energy plastics (HDPE, LDPE, some polypropylenes) and rough textured containers.

Best face stocks for demanding conditions

For most CPG, beverage, and cannabis brands, we recommend white BOPP with a matte over-laminate. It's waterproof, ice-bucket-proof, and doesn't scuff during last-mile shipping. Paper labels are cheaper but wick moisture and lose adhesion in refrigerated storage — we've seen brands lose entire batches to this after they moved from a room-temperature warehouse to a chilled DC.

What about UV exposure?

Direct sun for more than 30 days will fade CMYK on any label. If you need outdoor durability, spec a UV-protective over-laminate (adds about 15% to the unit cost) and consider spot Pantone inks where color accuracy matters — Pantone survives longer than CMYK builds in direct sunlight.
