What is white BOPP — and why is it on almost every premium bottle?

BOPP stands for biaxially oriented polypropylene: a plastic film stretched in two directions during manufacturing so it becomes strong, dimensionally stable and completely waterproof. White BOPP is that film with a bright white face, coated to take ink. Paper labels wrinkle in an ice bucket, tear on a conveyor and stain in a bathroom. White BOPP shrugs all of it off. It is water-, oil- and chemical-resistant, tear-proof, stays stuck down to 40°F, and takes lamination, foil and spot UV as cleanly as any premium paper. That is why it is the default label for craft beverage, cosmetics, personal care, candles, supplements, cannabis and food.

White BOPP vs. paper vs. clear BOPP

Paper (semi-gloss or uncoated): lowest cost, warm hand-feel, but absorbs water and tears. Fine for dry goods on a shelf; wrong for anything refrigerated, sweating, or handled wet.
White BOPP: waterproof, tear-proof, bright white base for vivid colour. Slightly higher cost than paper, dramatically longer life. The all-rounder.
Clear BOPP: the same film without the white layer — used for the "no-label" look on glass. Colours need a white ink underprint to pop, and tiny bubbles show on application. Choose clear only when transparency is the design.

Which adhesive should I choose?

Permanent (default): general-purpose acrylic adhesive, service range –4°F to 158°F. Right for glass, PET, HDPE, metal and coated cartons. Not for very tight curves under ~1" diameter.
Aggressive: rubber-based hot-melt for high initial tack — low-energy plastics (LDPE squeeze bottles, PP tubs), textured surfaces, and cold-apply lines down to –40°F. Costs about 10% more.
Removable: acrylic adhesive that peels cleanly for months. Right for rental equipment, reusable containers, retail price/promo labels and sampling programmes.

Lamination: do I need it?

Unlaminated BOPP is already waterproof — the ink is what needs protecting. Lamination is a clear film bonded over the print that stops scuffing, fingerprints, and abrasion on high-speed lines and in shipping cases. For anything that will be handled repeatedly or rubbed against other bottles, laminate.

Gloss lamination: maximum colour pop and shine. The classic beverage and household look.
Matte lamination: soft, low-glare, premium. The cosmetics, candle and craft-spirits look. Pairs beautifully with foil and spot UV because the contrast is stronger.
Soft-touch lamination: velvety, almost suede-like feel. The luxury tier for skincare, fragrance and top-shelf spirits.

Adding foil to BOPP labels — flat foil and raised foil

Foil is the single most effective way to make a label look expensive, and white BOPP is an excellent foil substrate because the surface is perfectly smooth and non-porous — foil adheres crisp with sharp edges and no feathering.

Flat (hot-stamp) foil

A heated die presses metallic foil into the label surface. It sits flush, mirror-bright, and is available in gold, silver, rose gold and holographic. Use it for logos, monograms, borders and small type down to about 6 pt. Flat foil over matte lamination is the most requested premium combination we run.

Raised foil

Raised foil combines a clear, dimensional UV layer with a metallic foil on top — so the logo is both mirror-bright and physically raised off the surface, catching light and inviting touch. It reads as embossed foil without a separate embossing die. Raised foil is ideal for a hero logo or product name; keep detail above 8 pt and avoid large solid areas, which can look heavy.

Foil design rules

Supply foil as a separate spot colour layer named "FOIL" (or "RAISED FOIL") set to overprint, in 100% solid — no tints or gradients.
Keep foil 1/16" away from the label edge and from any die-cut.
Foil over gloss lamination looks slick; over matte lamination it looks luxurious. Over soft-touch it looks like a fragrance box.
Foil is priced as a set-up plus per-label surcharge, so unit cost drops sharply at 1,000+ labels.

Spot UV on synthetic labels

Spot UV is a clear, high-gloss varnish applied only where you specify — a logo, a pattern, a texture. Against a matte-laminated white BOPP label the contrast is dramatic: the spot-UV areas look wet and glossy while the rest stays soft and flat. Spot UV can also be applied as a raised (dimensional) layer for a tactile effect. Popular uses: a gloss logo on a matte label, a subtle repeating pattern behind product text, glossy droplets on a beverage or skincare label, or gloss highlights on a photographic image.

Supply spot UV as a separate spot colour layer named "SPOT UV", 100% black, set to overprint.
Minimum line weight 0.5 pt; minimum type size 6 pt. Fine hairlines can fill in.
Spot UV is applied after lamination, so it always sits on top and always works with matte or soft-touch finishes.
Combine spot UV + flat foil on the same label for a two-texture finish — foil for the logo, gloss pattern for the background.

Shapes, sizes and roll specs

Rectangle, square, circle and oval shapes are standard with square or rounded corners; custom die-cut shapes are available. Sizes run from 0.5 × 0.5" up to full wrap-around bottle labels. Labels ship on rolls wound to your applicator's spec — tell us your core size (1", 3" or 76 mm), unwind direction and max roll diameter in production notes and we will match your machine. Hand-applying? We default to a 3" core, outside wound, top-of-label first.

0.125" bleed on all sides; keep text and critical art 0.0625" inside the die line.
